  3. This is the README.TXT file for the 16-bit version
  4. of Icon Manager version 3.6.  This software requires
  5. a 16-bit Windows platform such as Windows 3.1 or
  6. Windows for Workgroups 3.11.  A 32-bit version of
  7. Icon Manager is available for use with Windows NT 3.5.
  8. Please contact Impact Software for more information.

  10. OVERVIEW
  11. --------
  12. Icon Manager is a powerful tool for working with
  13. icons in the Windows operating environment.  The
  14. same drag-and-drop interface used by Program Manager
  15. allows icons to be easily moved, copied, and organ-
  16. ized into files.  Read and write icons in all pop-
  17. ular file formats that contain icons including ICO,
  18. DLL, EXE, ICL, and ICA.

  20. Icon Manager will install icons into Program Manager
  21. or Norton Desktop DIRECTLY using the wizardry of
  22. Windows' Dynamic Data Exchange.
  23.  
  24. All of these features and more make Icon Manager
  25. the most complete icon utility available for the
  26. Windows operating environment!

  28. For those who would like to create or edit their
  29. own icons, Icon Manager offers two capable
  30. solutions.  Using your existing Windows Paintbrush
  31. application, Icon Manager uses the power of OLE to
  32. whisk you into a edit session with Paintbrush at
  33. the click of the mouse.

  36. Icon Studio, a professional quality application
  37. created specifically to offer powerful editing
  38. tools that elegantly extend your creativity.
  39. Icon Studio integrates seamlessly with Icon
  40. Manager and also serves as the best standalone

  49. Icon Manager is not free software.  It is released
  50. as shareware, which provides the opportunity for
  51. the program to be evaluated before it is purchased.

  63. DOCUMENTATION
  64. -------------
  65. Icon Manager includes on-line help that covers all
  66. aspects of program operation.  The information is
  67. conveniently organized into related topics and
  68. procedures to help you get started with any
  69. specific task you may have as soon as possible.

  72. INSTALLING ICON MANAGER
  73. -----------------------
  74. The Icon Manager package includes a graphical Windows
  75. installation program.  The name of the utility for
  76. installing to 16-bit Windows platforms such as
  77. Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups 3.11 is
  78. SETUP.EXE.
  79.  
  80. You should place all of the files included in the package
  81. on a floppy disk or in a temporary directory of your hard
  82. drive.
  83.  
  84. Run SETUP by selecting the 'Run...' command from the
  85. File menu of Program Manager or File Manager. Enter
  86. "d:\SETUP" as the Command Line, where "d" is the
  87. drive/directory that you are installing Icon Manager FROM
  88. (i.e. A:\SETUP).
  89.  
  90. 1. SETUP will then display an Installation Control window.
  91.    Three pushbuttons allow you to change the FROM and TO
  92.    drives and paths for your install.  SETUP initially
  93.    sets these values for you so that you can just click
  94.    the Install button if you do not need to make changes.
  95.  
  96. 2. If you would like to specify a different path for SETUP
  97.    to install Icon Manager to, select "Install To".  A
  98.    dialog will be displayed to allow a new location to be
  99.    selected.
  100.  
  101.    If you plan to use Icon Manager and Icon Studio, you
  102.    you should install both programs to the same location
  103.    on your computer. (see below, "Icon Studio")
  104.  
  105. 3. If you are using Program Manager as your Windows shell,
  106.    SETUP will allow a Program Group to be selected
  107.    to receive the startup icon for Icon Manager.  Select
  108.    the "Program Group" button to select the group that
  109.    will receive the startup icon.
  110.  
  111. 4. Select 'OK'.  SETUP will inform you when installation
  112.    is complete.
  113.  
  114. ICON STUDIO
  115. -----------
  116. Impact Software offers a quality icon editor application
  117. that can be used as a standalone program, for editing
  118. icon resource (ICO) files, and also acts as an integrated
  119. editing tool from within Icon Manager.  Icon Manager and
  120. Icon Studio integrate seamlessly when used together.
  121.  
  122. Icon Studio offers an extensive set of drawing and
  123. painting tools designed specifically for editing small
  124. graphic images.  The workspace can be sized as required
  125. to allow easy pixel-by-pixel editing.  All of Icon
  126. Studio's tools operate in the workspace while an actual
  127. size image provides immediate, real time display of the
  128. editing in progress.

  130. Icon Manager and Icon Studio are distributed for evaluation
  131. in separate file packages to provide the smallest size
  132. modules for users who download software for evaluation.

  134. When both Icon Manager and Icon Studio are installed on the
  135. same computer, they should be placed in the same directory
  136. on your hard drive.  Icon Manager will use Icon Studio for
  137. editing requests if it finds the program in the same
  138. directory that it is executed from.  If you would like Icon
  139. Manager to use Windows Paintbrush instead of Icon Studio,
  140. remove or rename the Icon Studio program (ICSTUD16.EXE or
  141. ICSTUDIO.EXE) if it is located in Icon Manager's directory.

  152.  SOFTWARE LICENSE

  154.  Non-licensed users are granted a limited license to use Icon
  155.  Manager on a 30-day trial basis for the purpose of determining
  156.  whether Icon Manager is suitable for their needs.  The use
  157.  of Icon Manager, except for the initial 30-day trial,
  158.  requires registration.  The use of unlicensed copies of Icon
  159.  Manager, outside of the initial 30-day trial, by any person,
  160.  business, corporation, government agency or any other entity is
  161.  strictly prohibited.

  163.  A single user license permits a user to use Icon Manager
  164.  only on a single computer.  Licensed users may use the
  165.  program on different computers, as long as there is NO
  166.  POSSIBILITY of it being used at one location while it is
  167.  being used at another, or on a computer network by more than
  168.  one user at a time.
  169.  
  170.  No one may modify or patch the Icon Manager executable files
  171.  in any way, including but not limited to decompiling,
  172.  disassembling, or otherwise reverse engineering the program.
  173.  
  174.  A limited license is granted to copy and distribute Icon
  175.  Manager only for the trial use of others, subject to the
  176.  above limitations, and also the following:
  177.  
  178.   1)    Icon Manager and all of its release files must be
  179.         copied in unmodified form, complete with the file
  180.         containing this license information.
  181.  
  182.   2)    No fee, charge, or other compensation may be requested
  183.         or accepted, except as authorized below:

  185.         A) Operators of electronic bulletin board systems
  186.            (sysops) may make Icon Manager available for down-
  187.            loading only as long as the above conditions are
  188.            met.  An overall or time-dependent charge for the
  189.            use of the bulletin board system is permitted as
  190.            long as there is not a specific charge for the
  191.            download of Icon Manager.

  193.         B) Vendors of user-supported or shareware software
  194.            approved by the ASP may distribute Icon Manager,
  195.            subject to the above conditions, without specific
  196.            permission.  Non-approved vendors may distribute
  197.            Icon Manager only after obtaining written
  198.            permission from Impact Software.  Such permission
  199.            is usually granted.  Please write for details
  200.            (enclose your catalog).

  202.         C) Non-profit user groups may distribute copies of
  203.            the Icon Manager diskette to their members,
  204.            subject to the above conditions, without specific
  205.            permission.  Non-profit groups may collect a disk
  206.            duplication fee not to exceed five dollars.

  208.   LIMITED WARRANTY
  209.  
  210.   Impact Software warrants that all disks provided are
  211.   free from defects in material and workmanship, assuming
  212.   normal use, for a period of 90 days from the date of
  213.   purchase.
  214.  
  215.   Impact Software warrants that the program will perform
  216.   in substantial compliance with the documentation supplied
  217.   with the software product.  If a significant defect in
  218.   the product is found, the Purchaser may return the
  219.   product for a refund.  In no event will such a refund
  220.   exceed the purchase price of the product.

  222.   EXCEPT AS PROVIDED ABOVE, IMPACT SOFTWARE DISCLAIMS ALL
  223.   WARRANTIES, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING, BUT NOT
  224.   LIMITED TO IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND
  225.   FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, WITH RESPECT TO THE
  226.   PRODUCT.  SHOULD THE PROGRAM PROVE DEFECTIVE, THE
  227.   PURCHASER ASSUMES THE RISK OF PAYING THE ENTIRE COST OF
  228.   ALL NECESSARY SERVICING, REPAIR, OR CORRECTION AND ANY
  229.   INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES.  IN NO EVENT WILL
  230.   IMPACT SOFTWARE BE LIABLE FOR ANY DAMAGES WHATSOEVER
  231.   (INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION DAMAGES FOR LOSS OF
  232.   BUSINESS PROFITS, BUSINESS INTERRUPTION, LOSS OF BUSINESS
  233.   INFORMATION AND THE LIKE) ARISING OUT OF THE USE OR THE
  234.   INABILITY TO USE THIS PRODUCT EVEN IF IMPACT SOFTWARE
  235.   HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.

  237.   Use of this product for any period of time constitutes
  238.   your acceptance of this agreement and subjects you to its
  239.   contents.

  241.   U.S. GOVERNMENT RESTRICTED RIGHTS

  243.   Use, duplication, or disclosure by the Government is subject
  244.   to restrictions as set forth in subdivision (b)(3)(ii) of
  245.   the Rights in Technical Data and Computer Software clause at
