This is the README.TXT file for the 16-bit version
of Icon Manager version 3.6. This software requires
a 16-bit Windows platform such as Windows 3.1 or
Windows for Workgroups 3.11. A 32-bit version of
Icon Manager is available for use with Windows NT 3.5.
Please contact Impact Software for more information.
OVERVIEW
--------
Icon Manager is a powerful tool for working with
icons in the Windows operating environment. The
same drag-and-drop interface used by Program Manager
allows icons to be easily moved, copied, and organ-
ized into files. Read and write icons in all pop-
ular file formats that contain icons including ICO,
DLL, EXE, ICL, and ICA.
Icon Manager will install icons into Program Manager
or Norton Desktop DIRECTLY using the wizardry of
Windows' Dynamic Data Exchange.
All of these features and more make Icon Manager
the most complete icon utility available for the
Windows operating environment!
For those who would like to create or edit their
own icons, Icon Manager offers two capable
solutions. Using your existing Windows Paintbrush
application, Icon Manager uses the power of OLE to
whisk you into a edit session with Paintbrush at
the click of the mouse.
Serious designers will want to tap the power of
Icon Studio, a professional quality application
created specifically to offer powerful editing
tools that elegantly extend your creativity.
Icon Studio integrates seamlessly with Icon
Manager and also serves as the best standalone
editor for icon resource files.
Register Icon Manager, and we'll register you
for Icon Studio for only $10 more (that's
less than HALF of the normal cost).
REGISTRATION
------------
Icon Manager is not free software. It is released
as shareware, which provides the opportunity for
the program to be evaluated before it is purchased.
We hope that after you try Icon Manager you will
like it so much that you will want to register.
By doing so you are voting with your pocketbook for
us to continue developing high-quality, Windows
shareware.
Complete information on how to register Icon Manager
is included in the REGISTER.TXT file.
DOCUMENTATION
-------------
Icon Manager includes on-line help that covers all
aspects of program operation. The information is
conveniently organized into related topics and
procedures to help you get started with any
specific task you may have as soon as possible.
INSTALLING ICON MANAGER
-----------------------
The Icon Manager package includes a graphical Windows
installation program. The name of the utility for
installing to 16-bit Windows platforms such as
Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups 3.11 is
SETUP.EXE.
You should place all of the files included in the package
on a floppy disk or in a temporary directory of your hard
drive.
Run SETUP by selecting the 'Run...' command from the
File menu of Program Manager or File Manager. Enter
"d:\SETUP" as the Command Line, where "d" is the
drive/directory that you are installing Icon Manager FROM
(i.e. A:\SETUP).
1. SETUP will then display an Installation Control window.
Three pushbuttons allow you to change the FROM and TO
drives and paths for your install. SETUP initially
sets these values for you so that you can just click
the Install button if you do not need to make changes.
2. If you would like to specify a different path for SETUP
to install Icon Manager to, select "Install To". A
dialog will be displayed to allow a new location to be
selected.
If you plan to use Icon Manager and Icon Studio, you
you should install both programs to the same location
on your computer. (see below, "Icon Studio")
3. If you are using Program Manager as your Windows shell,
SETUP will allow a Program Group to be selected
to receive the startup icon for Icon Manager. Select
the "Program Group" button to select the group that
will receive the startup icon.
4. Select 'OK'. SETUP will inform you when installation
is complete.
ICON STUDIO
-----------
Impact Software offers a quality icon editor application
that can be used as a standalone program, for editing
icon resource (ICO) files, and also acts as an integrated
editing tool from within Icon Manager. Icon Manager and
Icon Studio integrate seamlessly when used together.
Icon Studio offers an extensive set of drawing and
painting tools designed specifically for editing small
graphic images. The workspace can be sized as required
to allow easy pixel-by-pixel editing. All of Icon
Studio's tools operate in the workspace while an actual
size image provides immediate, real time display of the
editing in progress.
Icon Manager and Icon Studio are distributed for evaluation
in separate file packages to provide the smallest size
modules for users who download software for evaluation.
When both Icon Manager and Icon Studio are installed on the
same computer, they should be placed in the same directory
on your hard drive. Icon Manager will use Icon Studio for
editing requests if it finds the program in the same
directory that it is executed from. If you would like Icon
Manager to use Windows Paintbrush instead of Icon Studio,
remove or rename the Icon Studio program (ICSTUD16.EXE or
ICSTUDIO.EXE) if it is located in Icon Manager's directory.
